11th Edition of Solidarity Week Starts at UC3M

February 13 to 17 on the Getafe and Leganés Campuses

2/13/17

Universidad Carlos III de Madrid (UC3M) is holding nearly fifty activities on the occasion of the 11th Solidarity Week, such as movie forums, talks, exhibitions, round tables and workshops, to take place on the Getafe and Leganés campuses from February 13 to 17.

Semana de la Solidaridad

The migratory crisis, inequality and the recently approved Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are the three main focuses of this initiative, which seeks to raise awareness about the importance of personal and civic commitment in the struggle against injustice and inequality.

Some of the subjects this year’s edition addresses are the refugee camps in Greece, experience with children with cancer, collective micro-financing as an instrument of support to solidarity, international volunteering opportunities and the peace process in Colombia.

Dozens of experts will collaborate and different speakers will take part in the activities. Two of the keynote speakers are Miguel Ángel Moratinos and James Moiben. Moratinos, former Minister of Foreign Affairs and current president of the Spanish Network for Sustainable Development, will speak about the SDGs. Moiben, athlete and founder of the NGO named after him, combines his profile as a professional athlete in Spain with his experience as the director of a school for children with limited resources in their native Kenyan village.

The activities will be concentrated on the Getafe and Leganés campuses this week, although the programming continues until June. UC3M students can earn one academic credit for humanities or as an elective with the Solidarity Passport.

Solidarity Week is an initiative jointly coordinated by the Office of University Cooperation and Development, the Vice-Rectorate for International Relations and Cooperation, the Environmental Unit, the Vice-Rectorate for Students, Social Responsibility and Equality and the Center for Sports, Activities and Participation, from the Vice-Rectorate for Communication and Culture.
