Fourth edition of Secondary Debate League starts at UC3M

2/10/17

Is Europe prepared to accept immigration? That is the subject participating teams from ten high schools in the Autonomous Region of Madrid debated Wednesday, February 8, in the Secondary Debate League on the Getafe campus of Universidad Carlos III de Madrid (UC3M).

The League, holding its fourth edition, is a competition based on dialectical confrontation between teams, whose speakers take turns to defend a position on a controversial current issue. Specifically, the subject this year puts the focus on a growing social phenomenon, immigration, which has left a deep imprint on civil society in recent months and has economic, human, political and social implications.

The goal of the Secondary Debate League is for students to put into practice skills to improve their ability to argue, speak in public, and compare opinions while working as a team member. It is, in short, to establish a space to enrich the debate of ideas.

This encounter also combines competition with the education of the student and presentation of arguments and proposals. To prepare, students must research the subject thoroughly, because competing teams in each debate defend opposing positions that are assigned through a draw.

As in previous editions, the UC3M Debate League gives students a chance to participate as volunteers in the competition. This way, in addition to reinforcing their commitment to participate in university activities, they also receive a general education about the figure of the volunteer and a more specific one about oratory and debate.

In Spain, university debating is growing in importance, but it is in the United States and Great Britain where it is very popular. Prestigious universities like Oxford and Harvard have been holding debates for decades. In recent years, UC3M has established itself as the model for university debating in Spain. This is evidenced by the multiple prizes and awards received, the high level the teams show in the competitions and the careful organization of the UC3M Debate League, which will be held this year from March 29 to March 31.
