UC3M opens two parking lots for bicycles and electric motorbikes

2/2/17

Universidad Carlos III de Madrid inaugurated two new parking lots for bicycles and electric motorbikes on February 1 at its Getafe and Leganés campuses. UC3M Rector Juan Romo and Leganés Mayor Santiago Llorente Gutiérrez, among others, took part in the presentation ceremony, held at the Leganés campus. At the Getafe campus, the Rector was accompanied by Herminio Vico, First Deputy Mayor and Councilman of the Treasury, Citizen Safety and Mobility.

La UC3M amplía su aparcamiento de bicicletas y motos eléctricas

At the ceremonies there were three examples of the innovative Bultaco Brinco Moto-Bike, a combination between a motorcycle and an electric bicycle which runs on electric power controlled by a throttle grip. The bike has independent pedaling and a range of up to 100 kilometers.

This initiative is part of the commitment of UC3M to sustainability and the environment, set out in the University’s Strategic Plan, and was promoted by University Administration with the support of the Office of Energy, Development and Environment and UC3M Labor Risk Prevention Service.

At the inauguration ceremonies, there was an exhibition of one of the latest models of electric motorbikes, presented by Bultaco.  This legendary Spanish motorcycle manufacturer announced its official return to the market in 2014 thanks to the efforts of LGN TECH Design S.L., a spinoff of UC3M created in 2010 with the support of the University Science Park.

The new facilities are located, on the Getafe campus, at the main entrance of the Ortega y Gasset Building and, on the Leganés campus, at the patio entrance to Area A of the Betancourt Building, in front of the locomotive.

In Leganés, the parking lots cover an area of 101m2, and have spaces for 30 bicycles and five electric motorbikes. The lot also has a section with 15 charging stations, each equipped with a plug for charging bicycle batteries. Five sockets have also been installed so that motorbikes can be charged in the same place they are parked.

On the Getafe campus, the facilities cover an area of 43m2, a space prepared to hold 16 bicycles and six electric motorbikes. In addition, eight charging stations have been set up at the Carmen Martín Gaite Building, next to the parking lot, so that cyclists can plug in their bicycle batteries. In the area for motorbikes, six sockets have been installed.

The parking lots on both campuses are located in well-lit areas monitored by closed-circuit television cameras. They have a two and a half meter perimeter fence that is accessed with a card that activates an automatic gate. In accordance with current legislation, an emergency exit has also been installed.

UC3M Backs Clean Transportation

With the goal of promoting the commitment of the UC3M to sustainability and the environment, it has been established that any person from the University Community can access the parking lots free of charge. All that is required is the activation of the university card by the university Infrastructures Service. The goal is based on promoting the use of this transportation in this way.
