The University for Seniors at UC3M is celebrating its 20th anniversary

9/27/16

The adult education programme for seniors at Universidad Carlos III de Madrid (UC3M), which celebrates its 20th anniversary this year, is launching a new schedule of its cultural and lifelong learning courses. Since its launch in 1996, some 22,000 students, with an average age of between 62 and 65, have enrolled on these courses.

From the first experiences with the AEP (Aula de Educación Permanente / Lifelong Learning Class) in 1996 to the current culture courses, the training programmes for seniors at UC3M have experienced an extraordinary transformation. Under the slogan "education of all, for all and on a lifelong basis", the scheduling of courses over these two decades has evolved and, at the same time, adapted to social changes.

The present schedule provides a training programme that combines around two dimensions. Firstly, the Culture Programme (programa de Cultural) which focuses on universal, Spanish and  contemporary culture, and is taught on the Getafe and Colmenarejo campuses; these courses are structured in  annual blocks of sixty hours and offer six different subjects on each campus, primarily in the area of Humanities: "Science and Culture", "Moral Philosophy", "Digital Humanities", "Contemporary Literature", "Mythology and History", "Museums" and "Cultural Heritage" are just some examples

Secondly, the quarterly 45 hour AEP Monographic Courses (los cursos monográficos del AEP), are offered on the Getafe and Colmenarejo campuses and also, since 2014, on the Puerta de Toledo campus. "Geopolitics in Spain", "The City and Cinema" and "Readings of our Golden Age" are some of the seminars to be held in the current academic year. These courses not only allow students to probe into a variety of topics, they offer greater flexibility, a key element in making lifelong learning more accessible.
