Information

Increasing the European collaboration and exchange of information and experiences is among the main challenges of Industrial Mathematics. ECMI has done important work in the past twenty five years, particularly in the educational area coordinated by the Educational Committee (EC). Different analysis of the existing master programs within ECMI has led the EC to conclude that there is a need to revise them to allow for greater flexibility, better usage and share of resources available at the regional, national and European levels, as well as greater mobility without losing the common educational ground. Moreover, there are many universities that would implement a Master program in Industrial Mathematics if these needs were attended by developing and implementing a new curriculum in IM on the basis of the ECMI methodologies.

The ECMI Masters in Industrial Mathematics (ECMIMIM) project is an Erasmus - Curriculum Development grant whose main aims are:

Creation of a Model Curriculum with best practical solutions in Industrial Mathematics for the European MS programmes in Industrial Mathematics with the leitmotiv of exposing the students to real world problems in industry. Our past ECMI experience facilitates the coordination and compatibility of the MS programmes and degrees offered by the Partners, including similar entry requirements for students. It will also lead to a fluid exchange of students and staff mobility.

Implementation of new integrated local European Masters in Industrial Mathematics on the basis of the Model Curriculum and leading to recognise double degrees to the students.

Creation of MS special courses shared among the Partners; creation of pilot e-courses to be disseminated via web. These courses will cover those special topics in which each Partner is expert and together will cover extensive areas of applications.

Creation of a European Summer School in Industrial Mathematics with participation of industry and Study Groups open to students. The Summer Schools and Study groups will let sharing information about opportunities for students to work with industry, and will greatly improve the current situation of Industrial Mathematics in Europe.

The Model Curriculum and the related educational structures are intended to serve an increasing number of Partners, thereby allowing transfer the advantages of the educational development to other European universities. The target groups for this project are students with Mathematics, Engineering, Computer Science, Physics or Scientific backgrounds who have completed at least 180 ECTS in courses at the Batchelor level. The innovative features of ECMIMIM are:

  • The European Model Curriculum, which will facilitate mobility at the European scale.
  • Its open ended architecture, which will allow studies in at least two institutions among the Partners backing the project, and will facilitate future incorporations from or outside ECMI.
  • Better practices in Industrial Mathematics.
  • Possibility of student internships in companies of different countries.
  • Large choice of Special Courses that will be pooled by the Partners together with the e-courses.
  • A Joint European web environment to give greater access to and exchange of information.
  • The European Summer School in Industrial Mathematics and elective yearly Study Group Meetings.

The ECMIMIM Consortium has been set up on the basis of the universities participating in the ECMI EC and acts as Pilot Group. Two types of universities participate: (i) those already running an IM Master program and participating in common activities, and (ii) those planning to implement such a program in the near future. The ECMIMIM partners are: Technische Universität Dresden (DE, Germany), Tartu Ulikool (EE, Latvia), Universitat Autonoma de Barcelona (ES, Spain), Universidad Carlos III de Madrid (ES, Spain), Lappeenrannan Teknillinen Yliopisto (FI, Finland), Ecole Nationale Superieure des Mines de Paris (FR, France), Università degli Studi di Milano (IT, Italy), Lund University (SE, Sweden), University of Oxford (UK). The project coordinator is J. M. Gambi (U. Carlos III).

Although all partners collaborate in the different tasks of the project, there are specific tasks each with a responsible partner in ECMIMIM. These tasks are as follows: Management, Model Curriculum and Design (Universidad Carlos III), Quality and Evaluation Plan (Lund University), Dissemination and Exploitation Plans (TU Dresden) Special Courses Pool and e-courses (TU Lappeenranta and Tartu), European Summer School (Milan), European Study Groups workshops (Oxford), and Meetings (Paris).
