Carlos III University of Madrid aims to make its webpage contents accessible to any person regardless of their disability, in accordance with the UNE norm 139803:2004 (AENOR). This norm is based on the guidelines of WCAG 1.0 of WAI-W3C very similar to the Spanish norm.
We are aware of the limitations of the technological infrastructure but we are using all the tools available to us to overcome those limitations, both through contact with our software supplier so as to improve the product, as well as through measures taken at a local level that we can carry out ourselves.
Among the measures implemented to improve content accessibility, the following can be highlighted:
- Keyboard shortcuts which make it easier to navigate without a mouse and provide direct access to main subject areas.
- Possibility of increasing or reducing the size of the typography since relative units are used.
Alternative methods for non-textual information.
- Representation of tabulated data is carried out according to the guidelines established by the WAI, correctly labelling the headers, rows and columns. Additionally each table includes a title and summary.
- Automatic re-routing has been avoided.
- Information based only on colour is not shown.
- Compatibility with most web navigators operated under different platforms.
- Textual descriptions for multimedia contents.
- Position locator.
Because of the large volume of migrated web contents and the complexity of some of these, we are still in the process of adapting the contents to the AENOR norm (priority 2). Short run plans include:
- Solving the technical problems which impede priority 1 level of accessibility.
- Carrying out the changes needed to reach priority 2 level and continuing to work to reach priority 3 level.
Accessibility analysis of the Carlos III University web page was carried out using the Web Accessibility Test (TAW), followed up by personal revisions.
