The Biomedical Engineering Initiative at UC3M aims at creating a centralized venue for engineers and medical, biological and physical scientists to work together and to coordinate expertise, tools and discoveries in order to promote synergetic education and research in biomedical engineering. This university-wide strategic initiative is projected to attract a number of outstanding faculty members to the new Department of Bioengineering, who will also be involved in the research-oriented Institute of Biomedical Engineering, developing the key focus areas of :

This project, jointly funded by public and private sources, provides purpose-built laboratories, shared common support facilities, a core of securely funded staff, the latest equipment for research and development and the right setting to promote high-quality research and facilitate technological transfer. The initiative involves an advisory committee of internationally renown scientists coordinated by Prof. JC Lasheras of University of California San Diego.
