He organized the 1992 ACM-SIGIR Conference in Denmark and served as PC Chair 1995 and 2000.

He co-initiated the CoLIS conferences and chaired its 2^nd meeting (1996) and organized the 1^st International Symposion on Information Interaction in Context (IiiX) in 2006.

He has published several highly cited research monographs, and more than 90 journal articles and conference papers, in addition to editing work.

Among his academic awards are the 1993 Jason Farradane Award, UK and the ASIS&T Distinguished Research Award in 2003. In 2005 he received the Derek de Solla Price Medal for his informetric and webometric research by the International Society of Scientometrics and Informetrics and was in 2007 awarded the ASIS&T Best Teacher Award of Information Science.

He is member of the editorial boards of five internationally leading journals in IR and Bibliometrics.
